The Ultimate Survivalist's Guide to Minecraft: First Moments

When you spawn in, there are two types of spawns. Good spawns with trees, animals, rocks, water, villages, etc. Bad spawns have nothing but grass on a tiny island in the middle of the ocean. Wherever you spawn, no matter what, you MUST find and mine wood by holding left click/down on the screen/right bumper. One you have about 20 logs, you should make planks by putting one plank in any square in your crafting menu in your inventory. You can open your inventory by pressing E/X/Y/"...". Then, put four planks in each square to make a crafting table. After that, two planks on top of each other will make sticks. After that, you can make a wooden pickaxe (recipe below).

Once you make that, you need to find shetler. You could build a house, however, I would say you should dig into a cliff. It doesn't matter how it looks, at least for your first few nights. Once you have shelter, you should return there every night, so the monsters don't kill you. While it is nighttime, it would be a smart idea to mine. Just make sure to place torches as you go! After that, you can make stone tools! The recipe for every tool upgrade is the same, you just swap the material out. Asuming you've paid attention, you should have survived your first night!
